CERTIFICATE I in HORSEMANSHIP

Pre-requisite - None

Certificate I is your first milestone on the road to Horsemanship. If you have not been introduced or not practiced Natural Horsemanship, this is the place to start.

Cert I is by necessity about safety and basic skills with horses, because today, so many people are able to enjoy the beauty of owning and riding horses yet do not necessarily have the generations of horse knowledge behind them that can keep them safe and secure around those horses. Horses really are very dangerous creatures when the human does not know how to be around, handle, motivate and respect a horse in a way that is 'natural' to that horse. A fearful or disrespectful horse (prey animal) can be very harmful to a novice or scared, reactive human (predator) as the two "beings" react and respond very differently, to the same situation.

Cert I is very much about helping you understand how the horse sees the world, how the horse can react and why he reacts the way he does. The wonderful thing about horses, is that they have an almost endless ability to adapt to their surroundings if they are provided with the right approach, communication and support from their human.

So the question really is, "How do you become your horse's best friend" and the answer is to first become your horse's best Student. Cert I will help you to understand your horse's language and will help you show your horse that you can communicate with him as a 'horse'.

The result of achieving Cert I is that you will be able to understand your horse, communicate with your horse and have him:

  • stay out of your space,
  • walk with you,
  • move backwards and forwards
  • show little opposition to your requests
  • follow your directions
  • perform minor challenges on 12’ lead rope (eg. jump a small log, go into a float)
  • stand still while you halter him

You will also learn how to

  • safely saddle and safely prepare your horse on the ground before mounting
  • Safely mount and dismount (this may be very different than you practice now!)
  • ride with only one rein
  • use 3 rein positions to build safe habits, for control
  • use your leg for the most effective understanding
  • Canter and stop with safety
